Letter for Gerwyn Day

~376 words · 2 min read

Gerwyn my boy,

I write to you in what are my final moments. Please, forgive me and be not enraged at my decision to not summon you to my deathbed. It is my wish to not be seen by you as a weak and frail man. I want you to know that I have, and always will, love you and that I have been and am proud of everything that you have done and accomplished.

It is with a great and terrible sadness that I leave you and your mother alone. I hope that you and her will find happiness after my passing and that you shall take care of each other, as you always have. Continue your studies with diligence and honor; serve the Empire with pride and never forget that what you do reflects on our house.

I must now confess a secret that your mother and I have kept from you. I would have told you in person were I not a coward whose conscious has caught up with him. My boy, I have loved you as a son from the moment you were born and still do. But you are not my son and I am not your father.

You are Rhydwyn's son. From him you get your talents. You will inherit the estates of House Day from me and him in due time, but I implore you to keep this secret until both of us have departed this world. This was kept from you for your own safety and protection.

There are people who would hurt you and anyone you care about should they know this - part of what will become your property is an artifact of great age and craft called The Arident. To find it you will have to go to Vaerion's lost keep, that is the first step. No matter the cost, you must ensure that it does not fall into the wrong hands. Burn this letter and forget that you have read it. Only go on this journey once you have passed all of your trials and have enough experience as a mage and as a man.

I hope you are happy and fulfilled with the life that you build.

With great love,

Niclas Day
